When dealing with devices associated with home of the future type stuff I’m a big fan of most of the recent stuff available through consortiums like Power Control Systems and the Z-Wave alliance.

What’s interesting is that the new devices available shouldn’t be considered so much revolutionary as evolutionary in that they had been built other ways utilizing available basic component products but for those starting out they’re accessible as a tidy kit. Another perk is now you don’t require fluke testers around the house to figure it out.

Certainly there exist a few resemblances amongst the major players. For instance, few of the technologies use handheld remote products as message boosters, and it’s hard to find one that doesn’t use radio waves someway. When investigating further however, things get more involved – I’d rather not try to describe it at this point and make mistakes, a site like this Insteon does a good job of talking about any divergences.

Now if anyone has any visions relating to ways to make some moolah to make up for my new dependence, don’t hesitate to share!
