When it comes to devices related to automation I really like any of the recent stuff developed by consortiums such as the Zigbee Alliance and Home Automation Inc.

Some of the latest devices developed aren’t in reality as novel as they would seem seeing as these things likely had been done before using currently accessible basic component stuff but for beginners they are accessible as a clean little set. Another perk is you won’t feel like you need an electrical engineering degree to make it work.

Certainly there exist several correlations between the various technologies. For example, almost none of the product lineups use portable devices as RF repeaters, and it seems like all use RF to strengthen signals.
